Jatayu was a character from the holy religious book of Hindus, Ramayana, not known to many. As the name of this place is ‘Jatayupara’, it was named after Jatayu. When we read about Jatayu in the religious books of Hindus, then the mention of Jatayu is easily found in them.

A famous incident about Jatayu is from Tretayuga. It is said that when Jatayu was young, he went on a high flight in the sky with his friend Sampati. He had to go to the sun, but due to the heat and high velocity of the wind, Jatayu returned halfway but Sampati kept flying in the sky.

His wings were scorched by the intense heat of the sun and he fell unconscious. He was later treated by a supremely wise sage and recovered. The mention of property is also found in Ramayana at the time when Lord Shri Ram was on the seashore to go to Lanka. Sampati meets Lord Shriram and his army on the beach itself.

Battle of Jatayu and Ravana –

Jatayu Fight With Ravana

According to the Ramayana, Jatayu was a friend of King Dasaratha of Ayodhya, the father of Lord Rama. When King Dasaratha, at the behest of Kaikeyi (Lord Shri Ram’s second mother), had told Lord Shri Ram to exile for 14 years, during that time Lord Shri Ram, his younger brother Laxman and his wife Sita were in the forest around Jatayupara.

When Ravana was abducting Mother Sita on the basis of his illusory powers, Jatayu heard his voice. Jatayu fought an equal battle with Ravana to protect Mother Sita. Jatayu was old and his power was very less in front of Ravana, yet he continued the war. The cruel Ravana cut off both his wings with his sword. Jatayu got injured and fell on this Jatayupara hill in Chadayamangalam village located in the Kollam district of Kerala.

Mother Sita was surprised to see this sacrifice of Jatayu and she gave a boon to Jatayu that he will not die until he finds Lord Rama.

Later, when Lord Rama and Lakshmana reach Jatayupara in search of Mother Sita, they find Jatayu injured. Jatayu tells everything to the Lord about how Ravana abducted mother Sita. After telling everything, Lord Shri Ram wants to correct Jatayu but Jatayu refuses and says that Lord, the biggest goal of my life was fulfilled today by meeting you, and nothing can be better for me than that I am with my Lord Shri Ram. I am sacrificing my life in Ram’s lap. Later, Rama and Lakshmana perform the last rites of Jatayu’s body and travel to Lanka.
